Six people were arrested on Monday in connection with an attack on 15 Hindu temples and 100 Hindu homes in Bangladesh on Sunday. At least hundred people were injured in the mob attack that took place after 100-150 people protested against a Facebook post by a Hindu man insulting the Kaaba.
Groups such as Hefajat-e-Islam and Ahle Sunnat were involved in bringing out rallies in Nasirnagar on Sunday. They demanded capital punishment for 27-year-old Rasraj Das, who posted a Shiv ling inside the Kaaba. He was arrested on Saturday on charges of blasphemy. A faction of the protestors, however, attacked Hindu homes, idols and temples.
Duttobari, Nomosomudropara, Jagannath, Ghoshpara and Gouro temples were destroyed in the attack.
The local Superintendent of Police, Mizanpur Rahman, said that 150-200 people were involved in vandalising the temples. "Two hundred Hindu houses were ransacked and looted," Rahman told a local newspaper.
The mob attack went on for hours and was only contained around 2 pm. Security personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
Two different cases have been lodged, Rahman said. According to police, a group with vested interest launched the attack to sully the image of the government, which is secular.
