Director SS Rajamouli's, "Baahubali" (also spelled as "Bahubali"), has made good collection at the Chinese box office, but the film has failed to beat the opening weekend record of Aamir Khan's "PK."
"Baahubali: The Beginning," the first instalment in the "Baahubali" film series, was released in over 4000 screens across the globe on July 10, 2015. The movie has made brilliant collection in India and key international markets. After seeing its performance overseas, the makers decided to dub and release the film in few other foreign countries including China, Japan and Taiwan, which are considered as potential markets for the film industry.
Arka Media International struck a deal with leading Chinese distribution house, E Stars Films, which agreed to release "Baahubali: The Beginning," on revenue sharing basis. Though the deal was signed six months ago, the release of the film was delayed because the China government has limited the number of foreign language films released to 34 a year.
The Prabhas and Rana Daggubati starrer was released across China on July 22. The film was premiered in several locations on Thursday night. The movie opened to good response and collected approximately $0.12 million at the China box office on the first day. The period drama film showed decent growth and raked in $0.25 million and $0.25 million Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
"Baahubali: The Beginning" collected approximately $630,000 gross at the Chinese box office in the first weekend. The movie has landed in the 10th spot in China's 24th weekend business chart. China Box Office tweeted: "Indian film BAAHUBALI: THE BEGINNING debuted with est ¥4.2M ($0.63M) this weekend."
Aamir Khan's "Dhoom 3" collected $3.17 million at the Chinese box office in its opening weekend. His next outing "PK," which was released in the country in 2015, shattered this record by raking in $ 5.32 million. Taran Adarsh had tweeted on 26 May 2015: "#PK China Fri-Sun: $ 5.32 million. #PK Overseas total: $ 33.07 million [₹ 211.40 cr]. HIGHEST GROSSING HINDI FILM IN OVERSEAS."
"PK" is the highest grossing Indian film at the Chinese box office in the first weekend so far. "Baahubali: The Beginning" was expected to shatter this record, but it has failed to do so. The movie is yet to surpass the $1-million mark in the country.
"Baahubali: The Beginning" experienced over 60 percent drop in its business on Monday and collected $0.09 million at the Chinese box office on its fourth day. Rohit Venkatraman, an observer from the industry, tweeted: "#Baahubali #Bahubali 4 day gross at the #ChinaBoxOffice is $720k from the massive screen count of 3,946 @BaahubaliMovie."
