SS Rajamouli directorial "Baahubali" has done phenomenal business at the US box office. The Tamil version of the movie is all set to beat the record of AR Murugadoss' "Kaththi" in the US.
"Baahubali" was released in three versions in the US from which it has raked in Rs.46.15 crore. The Telugu version has contributed the lion's share of Rs.41.45 crore. The remaining two versions, Tamil and Hindi, have earned Rs.3.63 crore and Rs.1.02 crore respectively.
Without an A-list Tamil actor or popular Kollywood director, the Tamil version of "Baahubali" has earned such huge revenue. It has beaten the records of Ajith's "Yennai Arindhaal", which earned Rs.3.30 crore ($515,629) earlier this year.
Now, "Baahubali" is heading towards breaking the record of "Kaththi", the blockbuster that had earned Rs.3.98 crore ($622,114) last year. The film is likely to surpass the business done by Vijay's film this week. It will be a big achievement for the multilingual movie to break one of the big Tamil hits at the US box office.
However, the next big target for "Baahubali" will be the record set by Mani Ratnam's "Ok Kanmani". The film grossed Rs.4.57 crore ($714,334), notwithstanding that it did not have stars but brand Mani Ratnam along with good word-of-mouth helped the film.
Meanwhile, "Baahubali" has performed well in Tamil Nadu too. The combined collection of two versions (Tamil+Telugu) now stands at Rs.48 crore by the end of the third weekend.
The two instalments of "Baahubali", which has Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamanna Bhatia in the lead roles, were made with a budget of Rs.250 crore. While the first part, which was released on 10 July, cost Rs.120 crore, the second part will entail a spending of Rs.130 crore for the producers.
The second instalment of "Baahubali" will be released in 2016.
