Tamil films have created a good market overseas and in the last couple of years, Kollywood films have done well in places like the US, Canada, UK, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
In regions like Malaysia and Sri Lanka, Tamil films give good competition to other language films, including Bollywood flicks. In 2015, there were many films that did well. Below, we bring you the highest-grossing films overseas based on the numbers published by Tamil Box Office1:
Ranking 1: Baahubali
Prabhas and Rana Daggubati starrer was a bilingual movie that had been simultaneously made in Tamil and Telugu languages. Even though the movie primarily had Telugu stars in the lead roles, it did not stop the Tamil audience from making it a blockbuster. The combined collection of the two versions stand at $11.19 million.
Ranking 2: I
Vikram and Amy Jackson starrer is another movie that made good business from its Tamil and Telugu versions. The Shankar directorial film made fantastic collection despite getting mixed reviews. The Tamil version of the flick raked in $9.12 million overseas.
Ranking 3: Vedalam
Ajith starrer "Vedalam" not only did well at the domestic box office, but also kept cash registers ringing at overseas centres. The film, which had Shruthi Haasan and Lakshmi Menon in the lead roles, minted $4.96 million.
Ranking 4: Yennai Arindhaal
Ajith starrer "Yennai Arindhaal" was directed by Gautham Menon. The film had Anushka Shetty and Trisha Krishnan in the female lead roles. The flick raked in $4.55 million from overseas centres.
Ranking 5: Massu
Suriya and Nayantara starrer supernatural thriller "Massu" aka "Mass" did reasonably well overseas. The Venkat Prabhu directorial earned $3.82 million.
Ranking 6: Puli
Ilayathalapathy Vijay's "Puli", which featured big names like Sudeep, Sridevi, Shruthi Haasan and Hansika Motwani, was directed by Chimbu Deven. The film failed to keep the cash registers ringing and from overseas centres it collected $3.79 million.
Ranking 7: Uttama Villain
Kamal Haasan starrer "Uttama Villain" too bombed at the box office. The Ramesh Aravind's film made decent business from overseas by raking in $2.83 million.
Ranking 8: Kanchana 2
Raghava Lawrence directorial "Kanchana 2" is a horror-thriller and is one of the biggest hits of Kollywood in 2015. The film minted $2.50 million.
Ranking 9: Ok Kanmani
Mani Ratnam returned to form with his romantic film "Ok Kanmani". The Tamil film performed better in overseas than at the domestic centres. It raked in $2.37 million.
Ranking 10: Anegan
Dhanush and Amyra Dastur and Karthik's "Anegan" was a psychological thriller directed by KV Anand. The Tamil film made $2.13 million overseas.
