SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2 starring Prabhas has collected over Rs 100 crore gross at the overseas box office and thrashed the lifetime collection record of Chennai Express and Kabali in the first weekend.
Baahubali: The Beginning was a big hit at the overseas box office and its success has made the international theatrical rights of its sequel - Baahubali 2 - sell at a record price of Rs 64 crore. Like in India, millions of film-goers in foreign countries were inquisitive about the question "Why Kattappa kicked Baahubali?". Distributors have released the film in over 1,200 cinema halls across international markets
The Prabhas and Rana Daggubati-starrer received fantastic response on its opening day and went on strength to strength on Saturday and Sunday. Baahubali has collected Rs 65 crore gross in North America, Rs 24 crore in UAE/GCC, Rs 6.80 crore in Australia, 3.20 crore in UK/Ireland, Rs 1.50 crore in New Zealand and Rs 35 crore in Malaysia and other international markets in three days.
Baahubali 2 approximately collected Rs 135 crore gross (US$21.04 million) at the overseas box office in the first weekend. The movie is estimated to have earned Rs 70 crore for its international distributors in three days. The movie has also shattered the record of Chennai Express, Kabali and Baahubali: The Beginning, which collected $19.4 million, US$15.65 million and US$13.02 million, respectively, at the international markets in their lifetime.
Hindi films Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge were the first Indian films to explore the overseas market. Their success had encouraged other filmmakers to invade the international territories. My Name is Khan was the first Indian film to collect ₹100 crore gross, while PK went on to cross Rs 300 crore mark overseas.
