Emraan Hashmi-starrer "Azhar" combines two biggest passions in India – cricket and Bollywood – but the film failed to generate a good buzz at the box office on its release day. While "Azhar" had a slow start at the domestic box office, the film managed to make it in the top 10 biggest opener's list of 2016.
Trade experts had high expectations from Emraan's "Azhar," but the film opened with just Rs. 6.30 crore opening day box office collection. The first-day income of "Azhar" is the 10th highest opener of this year. "Azhar" overshadowed "Wazir" to enter in the top 10 highest opener list, which includes two Hollywood films
"#Azhar Fri ₹ 6.30 cr. India biz... Sat and Sun biz crucial to post a healthy weekend total," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
Tony D'Souza's directorial film, which is based on Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin's life, was expected to open with good occupancy, but the film started on a slow note. Furthermore, the occupancy did not show much growth at the box office in the evening and night shows, as it failed to captivate audience's attention.
Nevertheless, despite a low opening, the first-day collection of "Azhar" is better than Emraan's previous movies. His last movie "Hamari Adhuri Kahani" minted Rs. 5.04 crore, "Mr. X" minted Rs. 4.5 crore and "Ungli" minted Rs. 3.6 crore.
Tony's directorial features Emraan in the titular role, Prachi Desai as his wife Naureen, while Nargis Fakhri plays the role of his second wife Sangeeta Bijlani.
