"Avengers: The Age of Ultron" team is going through a tough time as it already finds itself entwined in a number of controversies even before the release of the flick. Recently, "Captain America" Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner of the "Hawkeye" fame called Scarlett Johanson's character, Black Widow, a "slut and whore" in an interview.
Their comments faced some flak, post which both the actors issued statements on Thursday, apologising to the fans of the character for being childish and careless about their comments.
"Yesterday we were asked about the rumours that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize," read Evans' statement.
Meanwhile, Renner focused on the pressure that came from attending so many of the film's promotional tours and events. "I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone," his statement read. "It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour," said the actor.
The Interview was conducted by Digital Spy and the controversial statement had reportedly angered the fans of Black Widow as neither of the actors had good words to say about Johanson's character when asked about her romantic involvement with Capt. America, Hawkeye, and Hulk in the film.
"She's a slut," Renner replied promptly, while Evans added, "I was going to say something along that line, she's a complete whore. ... She'll flirt with everybody, leading everybody on."
