A truck carrying labourers overturned on Saturday in Mudhol, near Belgaum, in Karnataka, killing 22 people and injuring 30 others in the accident.
The mini truck was reportedly carrying more than 50 people when it overturned early in the morning near Hallaki Cross in Savadatti taluka of Belgaum district, more than 500 km from capital city of Bangalore.
"The accident took place around 5.30 am when the goods vehicle overturned after its driver lost control and hit a roadside kerb at Halki cross while going to Savadatti in Maharashtra from Yadgir district," Police Inspector SD Gudnavar told PTI. As per preliminary report, reckless driving by the truck driver caused the mishap.
The injured have been taken to a local hospital at Bailahongal in the district, said a police official. Officials added that three persons among the 30 injured were in critical condition.
According to NDTV report, the tribal labourers from Yadgir district in Andhra Pradesh were en route Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra when the tragic accident took place.
All those killed were daily wages labourers. While some were going to harvest sugar plantations for a sugar factory in Sawantwadi, rest were going to work in stone quarry.
A similar mishap took place three days ago when 14 migrant labourers were killed, and 23 others seriously injured, when the truck, in which they were travelling, overturned at Datia district in Madhya Pradesh.
