Update: Ajith's "Veeram", Vijay's "Jilla" Enter 50th Day Today
Ajith's "Veeram" and Vijay's "Jilla" are nearing the 50-day mark in several theatres across Tamil Nadu.
"Veeram" and "Jilla", which released on 10 January, are still being screened in theatres, despite many new releases in the last one month.
The Ajith and Vijay starrers will be completing 50-day theatrical run on 28 February. Most of the films that released after 10 January till the last weekend have failed to set the cash registers ringing.
Except for small-budget film "Goli Soda", other films have not been able to make it big at the box office. Even films that were expected to perform well have failed to register big collections. This, in turn, has worked in favour of "Veeram" and "Jilla."
For years, the biggest stars of Tamil cinema avoided releasing their films at the same time as it might affect the distributors. After nearly seven years, Ajith and Vijay's films clashed at the box office during the Pongal festival period. Distributors were wary of the films taking on each other, as it could affect other's business, but the action packed entertainers took fantastic openings on the first day of its release.
Although the films competed with each other, they managed to sustain well and rake in good collections, thanks to the 10-day long Pongal holidays.
The overall performance of "Jilla" has been below average in Tamil Nadu due to 30 percent entertainment tax, however, it has turned out to be a hit outside the state. The Vijay-Mohanlal starrer performed exceptionally well in Kerala and key overseas markets such as Malaysia. On the other hand, "Veeram" is an average fare in Tamil Nadu, but is a hit in other parts.
It is celebration time for Vijay and Ajith fans as their favourite stars' films are nearing the 50-day mark. Fifty day posters are being put up in Chennai city and other places to celebrate the success of the Pongal releases.
