Close to 100 armed Maoists attacked the Intercity passenger train passing through Jamui station in Bihar on Thursday.
A gun battle ensued between the rebel and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel leaving the train's guard and a security official gravely injured.
"According to the latest report, firing has stopped and additional forces have rushed (to the spot)," Amir Subhani, the state's principal secretary (home), told Times Now.
Madhuresh Kumar, General Manager of East Central Railways confirmed, "We have been told that at least 100 Maoists were involved in the attack."
The motive of the attack was mainly to seize arms of the RPF personnel.
While, Times of India reported, that some of the Naxals were already present in the train and pulled the chain when train was passing through a tunnel. According to the report, many passengers were looted at gunpoints as the extremists forced into several compartments.
However, latest reports suggested that the Dhanbad-Patna Intercity Express was safely moved out of the place and no passengers were injured.
Post the attack all Delhi-route train services have been temporarily suspended. Reports have stated that the naxals managed to grab two rifles of the security personnel.
Meanwhile Minister of State RP Singh has come out stating that the attack shows the naxals' need for arms and ammunitions which forced them to come out in the open.
"It is very unfortunate that the Maoists have begun attacking innocent people, trains and political rallies. We have already rushed CRPF and BSF personnel to the site of the attack," said RPN Singh.
"Our resolve against Naxals is unaffected and we will take all steps to take them on."
The attack comes in the wake of the Maoist's bloody ambush of Congress leaders which left around 19 people dead. On Tuesday itself, veteran Congress leader Vidya Charan Shukla, a victim of the attack in May, succumbed to his bullet injuries.
