Arsene Wenger has said Arsenals chances of progressing in the Champions League are at a minimum following their 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich. The London club were dismantled by the German champions at the Allianz Areana on 4 November, with goals from Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Mueller, David Alaba and Arjen Robben.
Wenger said: I believe first you have to give credit to Bayern for their quality and on top of that I think we made things quite easy for them with our defensive performance. We were extremely poor defensively, and we are not at the races.
My memory is not good enough to tell you if in 19 years it is the worst performance, it certainly will not remain in my memory for anything positive. We still have a chance to qualify, Olympiacos has to lose here, we have to beat Zagreb and then to beat Olympiacos at Olympiacos. Its a small chance but it is a real one, and I think we have to realise with that with the kind of performance we had today, that our chances are at a minimum.
The defeat leaves the Gunners bottom of Group F on just three points, with two games to go. Meanwhile the Bavarians top the group on goal difference, with Olympiacos also on nine points in second place.
Arsenal did pull one goal back through Olivier Giroud, but it was not enough as Bayern won yet again to continue their incredible season, which has seen them only lose one game.
Poland striker Lewandowski scored his fourth goal of the Champions League, and his 18th goal in 17 games this season. Dutch winger Robben came on for his first appearance since returning from injury and scored with his first touch.
It was a record-equalling Europeanloss for the Gunners, who will now look to bounce back on Sunday (8 November) in the North London derby against arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
