When a certain summer transfer drags and drags with no end in sight anytime soon, the inevitable result is a transfer report of the interested club lining up an alternative target. Well, for the Arsenal and Karim Benzema saga, that alternative target is Edinson Cavani.
Benzema to Arsenal has been the summer transfer sagas to beat all sagas – at least that is what most of the Arsenal fans will say – with a couple of reports a day cropping up over the striker's proposed move from Real Madrid.
Nothing concrete has happened yet, unless you want to believe the reports/tweets that suggest a fee and/or personal terms have been agreed, and, therefore, Arsenal are now being linked with a Benzema alternative.
Cavani is a name that has cropped up quite often in Arsenal's hunt for that marquee/world-class striker, with the Uruguay international not having the greatest of times since his big-money move from Napoli to PSG.
PSG manager Laurent Blanc and Cavani haven't been the best of buddies either, leading to suggestions the striker could leave the Parc des Princes this summer.
However, the PSG hierarchy have repeatedly said Cavani is not for sale, but according to Fichajes, Arsenal are preparing a bid.
Reports have suggested Arsene Wenger is prepared to break the club's record fee of £42.5million, paid to Real Madrid to sign Mesut Ozil in 2013, to bring Benzema to the Emirates, and you feel a similar amount will be necessary to prise Cavani away from PSG.
Cavani has not looked that great in the past few months, and Benzema does feel like the better option for Wenger, who has always been a big fan of the former Lyon striker.
With Real Madrid in need of funds in order to complete their own marquee transfers, Wenger could still tempt the Spanish club into selling Benzema.
Arsenal looked toothless in the 2-0 loss to West Ham on Sunday in their English Premier League opener, and maybe the arrival of a big name is the lift that the players need to finally make a concerted run at the title.
