Argentina did not get the desired result in their last FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers, so they will hope for a better one this time out, at home, against Paraguay. With the battle for the four automatic qualifying spots tightening up with every passing match, no team can afford to drop unnecessary points.
The Albiceleste failed to keep Peru at bay in Lima last week, with the home side coming back from a goal down twice to hold Argentina to a 2-2 draw. Even with the wealth of talent at their disposal, there is no denying that Argentina are a different team when Lionel Messi is not in the side.
Messi missed the Peru match with a groin problem and the Barcelona superstar will be absent again, when Paraguay come to Cordoba.
One of the players who will hope to step up in the absence of Messi is Sergio Aguero, with the Manchester City striker ready to feature for his country despite struggling with an adductor problem. Aguero was taken off in the 2-2 draw against Peru due to the issue, but the striker wants to be involved in this crucial game against Paraguay.
"I'm better, we did tests, I did well and I'm trying to get as fit as possible for Tuesday," Aguero told Ole. "(Argentina manager Edgardo) Bauza has the decision, but for Tuesday I will be available.
"I'm much better. After the Peru game I had two days to recover. You always want to play in the team and try to do your best. For now I feel good physically.
"Within five minutes of the second half against Peru I began to feel the tiredness on the calf. But I'm quite well now: you get physical fitness playing, not training.
"When you're at the national team you always want to take part, but the last time, for wanting to continue, I ended up injured against Ecuador. Sometimes you think: 'Why didn't I stop?' Because then I'm out for a month and a half and I miss six or seven games for City.
"But when they call you for the national team, you want to play at any cost. That's how it is."
Paraguay can move to within a point of Argentina with victory at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, and having gone down to a last-gasp goal to Colombia on Thursday, the team, who currently sit in sixth in the table, will be desperate to get something from the game on Tuesday.
