The first edition of Arab Indo Bollywood Awards (AIBA) will be held in Dubai next month. Filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia and Bollywood actor Javed Jaffrey launched the award show to promote Hindi cinema in the Gulf region.
The award ceremony will be held on 9 April at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. Filmmaker Karan Johar and actor Manish Paul will host the main event, while Bollywood biggies such as Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Parineeti Chopra will perform at the award show.
Jacqueline Fernandez, Varun Dhawan, Neha Dhupia, Kanika Kapoor and Meet Brothers are expected to give stunning performances, while more than 150 celebrities are expected to attend the show.
During a press conference, director Dhulia said that the award show has been launched to promote Hindi cinema in Arab countries.
"The idea was to create a collaboration between Arab and Indian audiences, which has historically shared a common love for cinema, but most importantly, it was also imperative that as filmmakers, we had an awards platform that did away with the politicking of trophies to allow the emergence of small-budget but good quality cinema," Dhulia said.
"The 25 trophies will be split across the categories of Main, Technical and Special Awards, which will be chosen 50 per cent by the jury members, while the remaining half will be voted by residents of the UAE, either online or via 100 ballot boxes that will be placed around the country," he explained.
The organisers have revealed the list of nominees several categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress among others.
An eight-member jury, including director Arbaaz Khan, trade expert Komal Nahta, actor Jaaved Jaffrey, Goldie Behl and Sreedhar Raghavan, shortlisted the films.
