Popular Playback singer Ankit Tiwari, who was arrested on alleged rape charges, has been sent to police custody till 12 May.
Ankit and his brother Ankur were arrested following a complaint filed by the rape victim at the Versova police station. In her statement, the victim has mentioned that she was introduced to Ankit Tiwari through a common friend in October 2012. She also stated that Ankit sexually assaulted her between October 2012 and December 2013 on the pretext of marrying her, but he failed to keep his word, reported Mid-Day.
"The victim gave her complaint in writing in February to the ACP and the concerned DCP. On that basis, we registered an FIR in March and after verifying the evidence, we arrested him on Thursday," Police inspector Machidra Vadkhe told the daily. Ankit has been sent to police custody and his brother, who was arrested for threatening the victim, was given bail.
The singer, however, has denied the charges made by the victim. He has stated that he is being framed and all charges made by the girl are "false and baseless."
In a press statement, Ankit's family has clarified the singer's stance regarding the issue. Ankit's family has said that the singer and the girl were good friends and wanted to take their relationship to the next level. However, Ankit found out that the girl was a divorcee and had a 13-year-old daughter. He was deeply shocked and hurt by the betrayal and asked the girl to put an end to the relationship, but she started threatening him.
"Ankit is a rising star of India and she just wanted to in-cash this opportunity. She started threatening Ankit, his brother and his family that she will teach a lesson to all of them. She started giving him threatening calls and finally she filled a false complaint to frame Ankit. We respect and obey Indian Judiciary and have faith in it. The truth will surely win. We need support and prays from our media friends and Ankit's fans," the statement further read.
