While sports is all about talent, fun and money, it has been tragic for some players who lost their lives in freak accidents while playing.
Recently, former Bengal Under-19 cricket captain Ankit Keshri, who was also a member of the U-23 squad, lost his life due to injuries sustained during a collision with a fielder while trying to take a catch.
Here are some sportsmen whose lives ended tragically. While most of them died due to on-field incidents, some died in accidents of a different nature.
Ankit Keshri
The 20-year-old promising cricketer suffered a head injury after an on-field collision during a local game in Kolkata on 17 April. He died on 20 April following a heart attack.
Peter Biaksangzuala
Mizoram footballer Peter Biaksangzuala succumbed to injuries he sustained during a match in the Mizoram Premier League (MPL) last year in October.
The 23-year-old, who played for Bethlehem Vengthlang FC, scored against rivals Chanmari West FC in the 62nd minute of a league match and landed awkwardly during his goal celebration, injuring his spine.
Phil Hughes
Phil Hughes was struck on the head by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and New South Wales. The Australian batsman fractured his skull and suffered massive bleeding in his brain and was operated upon in a Sydney hospital. Hughes died of his injuries two days later.
Raman Lamba
Raman Lamba, a former Indian cricketer, was hit on the head while fielding during a club match in Dhaka. He slipped into coma three days later, before being pronounced dead.
18 national football players
All the 18 football players of Zambia, the coach and the team's staff were killed in 1993 plane crash. The national football players lost their lives when the flight crashed into an ocean due to technical problem.
A similar crash took place in 1991, killing the entire US figure skating team.
