Australian Open winner Angelique Kerber said that she had experienced the best two weeks of my life, after upsetting world No 1 Serena Williams in the tournaments final on Saturday (30 January). Germanys Kerber, seventh seeded in Melbourne, posed with the tournament trophy at Melbournes Government House. She popped a bottle of champagne, before shaking it up and spraying it toward the cameras.
The 28-year-old left-hander beat Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to win her maiden Grand Slam title. Kerber said the win was a dream come true after first-round scare when she saved a match point against Misaki Doi of Japan.
You know the best moment – I had the best two weeks of my life – and the best moment of my career last night when I won the match point and I really took the grand slam. It was always my dream and my dream came true. When I was a kid I was always dreaming about this, to win one day a grand slam and I think I had a really crazy week, with the first round where I was match point down but yes, the best weeks of my life, said the German.
After the win Kerber has moved up the world rankings to No 2 in the world, leapfrogging five-time grand slam winner Maria Sharapova and moving former No 2 Simona Halep down to No 3.
