Dhanush starrer "Anegan" has got an earth-shattering opening in Tamil Nadu, but the movie has failed to beat the opening (3 days) weekend record of Ajith's "Yennai Arindhaal".
According to early estimates "Anegan" has earned about ₹16.1 crore in the three-day opening weekend. The Tamil movie had made ₹5.8 crore on the opening day, followed by ₹4.8 crore on the second day. On the third day (Sunday), the Tamil film has approximately earned ₹5.5 crore.
"Anegan" enjoyed good occupancy on Sunday, despite the India-Pakistan World Cup match. In Chennai, packed houses were witnessed during the prime-time shows. Please note that this is an early prediction from the trade and not the official figure.
However, Ajith's "Yennai Arindhaal" which had to share many big screens with "Anegan" grossed ₹31.25 crore (₹24.04 nett). It should also be noted that it had a non-holiday four-day weekend.
Traders were curiously looking forward to see whether "Anegan" could beat the opening weekend record of "Yennai Arindhaal" as Dhanush's movie, like Ajith's film, had a good pre-talk and had gotten positive word-of-mouth following the release.
Nonetheless, "Anegan" is being touted as the biggest opening of Dhanush's career. The performance of the latest movie clearly indicates that the actor is turning as a bankable star in Kollywood.
Meanwhile, we have to wait and see how "Anegan" will perform in the weekdays as it is crucial for the movie to recover its production cost. A good first week will ensure that the producer is in profits.
On the other end, the response has been good for "Anegan" in Karnataka and Kerala. The Tamil film has done well in some overseas circuits too.
"Anegan" is an action-romantic thriller directed by KV Anand and produced by Kalpathi S Aghoram.
