The unseeded Murray, ranked 832 on ATP charts, heads into the second round on the back of a hard-fought win against local player Mackenzie McDonald in three sets — 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The 31-year-old struggled with his serves in the first set and was broken twice by the 23-year-old opponent. Murray fought back to win the second set but he didn't have an easy time closing out the decider as the two players traded breaks towards the end of the match.

Tuesday's outing was only Murray's fourth match since Wimbledon 2017 as the three-time Grand Slam champion is still searching for top form following recovery from a serious hip injury that forced him out of the tour for almost a year.

Murray even withdrew from Wimbledon 2018, saying he had not reached the desired fitness levels to feature at the grass-court Grand Slam.

Murray cannot afford to commit the same mistakes again as he will be up against Edmund, who seems to be having one of the best seasons of his career in 2018.

Edmund has lost two of his three outings to Murray but the 23-year-old made light work of his senior compatriot 6-4, 6-4 in Nottingham last month.

For Edmund, the Australian Open 2018 semi-finalist, will be about improving his record against Murray and clinching a confidence-boosting win as he eyes to go further ahead into the tournament.

Nonetheless, the seasoned campaigner will be facing a tough test, which will augur well for him on his road to hitting the peak form ahead of US Open, the season's final Grand Slam tournament.
