Last week, Google announced the official name of Android 7.0 mobile OS as Nougat, a popular sugar-and-nuts confectionary.
The search engine giant has released the four developer preview versions of Android N to developers and is scheduled to roll-out the near-final firmware later this month. It has also revealed that the final Gold Master (GM) version will be deployed to the public in the third quarter, probably by the end of August or in early September.
The first Android devices to receive Nougat update are Nexus series and later, it will be rolled out to other brands.
Soon after the announcement of the Android 7.0 Nougat name, HTC revealed that three of its devices will get the new OS. Unlike HTC, Asus has not made any comments on roll-out schedule or on the list of devices eligible for the update.
To provide a better perspective, we have listed Zenfone series which are most certain to receive the new update.
Before we reveal the devices' names, we like to shed some light on how Asus has fared so far in terms of OS software support service.
Ever since the launch of the company's first generation smartphones-- Zenfone 4, 5, 6 series in 2014, Asus, despite facing hiccups in maintaining the previously announced schedule, has been able to deliver its promise of releasing the update.
Asus promised to roll-out the Android Marshmallow to the 2015 series models—Zenfone 2, 2 Deluxe, 2 special edition, Zenfone Max, Zenfone 2 Laser, Zenfone 2 Selfie and Zenfone Max in the second quarter of 2016.
So far, Zenfone Max (ZC550KL) and 2 Laser (ZE500KG/ZE500KL/ZE550KL) have got the update.
Last week, Asus commenced rolling out Android M to the Zenfone Zoom (ZX551ML) and 2 Selfie (ZD551KL) models. Still more than four models are yet to receive the Android v6.0 firmware.

So, which of the Asus Zenfone 2, 3 series gets Android Nougat update?
Going by the previous release pattern, Asus is likely to keep off— mid-range (Zenfone 2 Selfie) and budget (Zenfone 2 Laser and Max (1st gen)) models from Android Nougat release plans and try to include only the high-end Zenfone 2 series phones-- ZE551ML and ZE550ML and the company's most expensive phone-- Zenfone Zoom (ZX551ML).
Other Asus which are most likely to get to taste the Google's new sugar treat flavoured OS are the newly unveiled Zenfone 3, Zenfone 3 Deluxe and Zenfone 3 Ultra.
Even the 2016 series Zenfone Max (ZC550KL), which was released in India in May, is also expected to get the Android Nougat, as it is the best selling model for Asus in India.
That being said, Asus will take its own sweet time to make Android Nougat available to the aforementioned Zenfone devices.
