If you own one of Motorola's flagships Moto X (Gen 1) or Moto X (Gen 2), there is some good news coming your way. Starting next week, owners of both Moto X variants will be treated with Google's latest Android 5.1 Lollipop update in various markets.
Motorola commenced Android 5.1 soak testing for both handsets on Thursday and the new software will be ready for deployment next week, revealed Motorola's senior director of software product management, David Schuster, in a Google+ post.
Besides confirming Android 5.1 OS for Moto X (Gen 1 & Gen 2), Schuster also revealed the list of countries where the users will get the new software. According to the post, Moto X (Gen 1) users residing in Australia, Belgium, Hong Kong, India, Kuwait, Malaysia, Netherlands, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain and United Arab Emirates will get the Android 5.1 Lollipop next week.
Similarly, Moto X (Gen 2) owners in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Singapore and Sweden will also be treated with the new software.
Although Android 5.1 update has already been spotted on Moto X in some regions, the upcoming batch is a massive wave of soak testing. So far, no delay in the rollout has been reported but a separate post by Schuster confirmed that Android 5.1 Lollipop rollout for Moto X (Gen 1) has started for US Retail, Brazil Retail and Rogers in Canada.
How To Check For Android 5.1 Update On Your Device?
Since the update is being pushed over-the-air, users will get a notification to update their device. Click on "Install Now" and wait for the update to finish and restart when completed. If you haven't got any notification, go to Settings > About Phone > System updates and download the update if available or wait for a few days and check again. After updating the device successfully, confirm the change by checking the device OS version to 222.21.15.
What Are Major Changes With Android 5.1?
If you are updating from Android 5.0 Lollipop to Android 5.1 Lollipop OS, there is little change that you will witness. However, the latest software brings redesigned icons in Quick Settings, supports HD calling and fixes memory leak issue found in Android 5.0 build. In addition, the update enhances security of the device by locking it when stolen or lost. Google account credentials must be entered to continue using the device or the handset is rendered useless.
