Last weekend, Sony released the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update to Xperia T2 Ultra, and now the company has begun rolling out the new OS update to Xperia Z series via OTA (Over-The-Air).
Sony community website Xperia Blog has claimed that the new Android 5.1.1 Lollipop (build number: 10.7.A.0.222) has been made available to three smartphone and tablet models -- Xperia Z (C6602 & C6603), Xperia ZL (C6503 & C6506), Xperia ZR (C5503) and Xperia Tablet Z Wi-Fi (SGP311& SGP312) and Xperia Tablet Z LTE (SGP321).
How to install OTA update on Xperia Z Series:
If Xperia Z series device owners are getting the update notifications, then select "Yes, Download" option, and after downloading, select "Install now." The phone will restart automatically and the OS will be updated to the new version.
We would like to remind our readers that the roll-out process is being carried out in phases, so it will take some time to reach all corners of the world.
Until then, users can check for the OTA update manually by going to – 'Settings' >> 'About phone' >> 'System update' >> 'Check Now'.
The new OS update is said to bring additional customisation options like silent modes including new alert system, camera improvements with superior auto-mode focus, enhanced enterprise support, Xperia in Business features for work and option to take selfie via SmartWear. That means users can use Sony's SmartWatch 3 as a remote shutter button.
Sony has reportedly missed to include software patch to plug the Stagefright security loop hole in the Xperia Z series. This is quite strange as the company had released the same update with Stagefright bug-fix to Xperia T2 Ultra last week.
Sony might release separate security update soon and until that time, users are advised to take some precautionary measures like disabling automatic MMS read option, to thwart any vulnerability from Stagefright.
