IPS officer K Sasi Kumar died on Thursday morning as the result of a bullet wound from his service revolver at his office in Paderu, Visakhapatnam, in Andhra Pradesh.
His service revolver reportedly went off accidentally when he was cleaning it around 6 a.m. The bullet pierced his head and he was severely wounded, Narsipatnam officer on special duty Attada Babujee told the New Indian Express.
Sasi Kumar was declared dead on arrival by doctors at a hospital in Paderu. Officers have not ruled out the possibility of suicide.
"We are not sure whether it happened accidentally or done intentionally. The Visakhapatnam (Rural) SP has rushed to the spot and we are examining the case," said North Coastal Zone Inspector General of Police Kumar Vishwajeet was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Upon receiving this information, the superintendent of Visakhapatnam Rural Police Dev Sharma and other senior officers rushed to Paderu.
According to sources, Sasi Kumar's body is being shifted to the King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam for post-mortem.
Kumar, who hailed from Tamil Nadu, got his first posting in Alagadda in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. He took charge as the ASP of Paderu six months ago. He was an IPS officer of the 2012 batch.
According to Newsminute, Kumar's contributions helped in the seizure of drugs worth crores during anti-narcotic raids.
The police have registered a case in this regard.
