Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has lost 75% of his liver due to Hepatitis B, and is currently surviving on just 25% of the organ.
Big B revealed his current health condition during the launch of a Hepatitis campaign. Amitabh Bachchan said he was infected by the virus when he met with an accident during the shooting of "Coolie".
The 73-year-old met with a dangerous accident during the shooting of his 1983 blockbuster, following which he was injected with blood from different donors. According to him, he got the Hepatitis B virus from one of these donors.
"Hepatitis B came to me accidentally. After my accident on the sets of 'Coolie', I was infused with the blood of about 200 donors and 60 bottles of blood were injected into my system. The Australian antigen Hepatitis B had only been detected three months earlier, and it was still very new. One of my blood donors carried the Hepatitis B virus, which went into my system. I continued to function normally till 2000, and almost 18 years after the accident, during a very normal medical checkup, I was told my liver was infected and I had lost 75% of it. So, if I am standing here today, you are looking at a person who is surviving with 25% of his liver," The Indian Express quoted Amitabh Bachchan as saying.
The "Wazir" actor also said although he is surviving on just 25% of his liver, one can live with even 12% of the organ.
