IBTimes Rating: 4
Remember the days when your stomach hurt from laughing so hard watching Malayalam hit comedy films "Punjabi House", "Nadodikattu", "Swapnakood", "Thengashi Pattanam" and "Thommanum Makkalum"? You might have watched it a thousand times, but the hit dialogues of these films still make us laugh, no matter what.
After a long time, you will have the same good feeling while watching the multi-starrer "Amar Akbar Anthony", which was released on 16 October.
With some fresh comedy, the film creates a laugh riot in theatres taking us back to the days of good old comedy entertainers of the 80's and 90's.
Plot
The film revolves around three young middle class people, who stay in the same colony in Kochi. They also spend a lot of time together partying and enjoying their lives and do not really bother about taking up family responsibilities. Their only aim in life is to visit Pattaya in Thailand, for which they save money every month. However, due to some family circumstances, their trip gets delayed each time.
The film also brings to fore one of the most important social issues of these days and how these youngsters deal with it forms the crux of the story.
Cast
After the 2006 film "Classmates", the trio -- Prithviraj Sukumaran, Indrajith Sukumaran and Jayasurya -- has once again mesmerised the audience with their amazing chemistry.
From KPAC Lalitha, Bindu Panicker, Priyanka and Sreeraman to Abu Salim, Srinda Ashab, Pradeep Kottayam, Sashi Kallingal, Kalabhavon Shajon and Saju Navodaya, the film has an ensemble cast. Each one of them has done justice to their character.
Without even a single dialogue, Shafiqu Rahiman has done a great job as the villain of the film from its first scene onwards.
The child artist Meenakshy, who portrayed the character Pathukutty, needs a special mention as she is loved by every viewer for sure. Even though Siddique just appears in two scenes as a police officer, he was given a big round of applause by movie-goers.
Ramesh Pisharody, Dharmajan and Thesni Khan also have pivotal cameo roles in the film. The entire story is narrated by Asif Ali and his classic intro scene was amazing. Audience have already started repeating his hit dialogue "Confidence kondalla, Ahangaram kondaanu".
Direction and Scripting
Hats off to comedian, singer and mimicry artist Nadirshah for making a decent debut as a director. He has selected the right cast for the film and with just this film, he has met the standards of Rafi-Mecartin and Siddique-Lal combination type hit films.
Apart from the climax, there isn't much twists and turns in the film, but thanks to Bipin George and Unnikrishnan's for coming up with fresh comedy dialogues.
Songs
Like always Nadirshah's songs in "Amar Akbar Anthony" also have a comic touch and "Premamenthal Enthanu Penne", sung by the lead actors has already become a hit on the chart list. The romantic song "Manjaadum Maalala", which has Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil lyrics, shot in Ramoji Film City is a clear visual treat. Singer junior Shreya's song "Yenno Njaanende" is sweet.
Technical Aspects
The background score by Bijipal, Sujith Vasudev's cinematography, Sameera Saneesh's costumes and John Kutty's editing works make "Amar Akbar Anthony" a good entertainer.
Final Verdict: "Amar Akbar Anthony" is sure to make you laugh with some fresh comedy throughout. It also asks the youngsters to react to the social issues of these days. Don't miss it if you love to watch comedy films, but do not expect too much. Worth watching and paisa vasool entertainer.
