Alia plays a daily wage labourer from Bihar who comes to Punjab in search of work, but ends up being a victim to drug trafficking that is prevalent in the region.
It would be the first time the "Student of the Year" actress, will play a rural woman.
The "Highway" actress had recently mentioned that her role in "Udta Punjab" is the toughest role she has played in her acting career.
