Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, which falls on the third lunar day of Shukla Paksha during the month of Vaishakha, is one of the most auspicious days celebrated by Hindus. This year, it is being celebrated on Monday, May 9.
The word "Akshaya" means 'the never diminishing' in Sanskrit, and the most common practice followed by people during the day is the purchase of gold. This is said to bring good luck and success. The day is believed to be the birthday of Lord Parasurama — the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is also said that the sage, Veda Vyas, and Lord Ganesha began writing the epic Mahabharata on this day.
