A Shiromani Akali Dal leader was arrested for killing an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) who was trying to save his daughter from molesters.
Ranjit Singh Rana, Akali Dal general secretary, allegedly shot dead the ASI of the Punjab Police, Ravinder Pal Singh, in public view on Wednesday.
According to reports, Ranjit Singh was sacked from the post of general secretary following the allegations. Ranjit Singh shot Ravinder on the main GT road, several meters away from Chehhertta Police station. Eyewitnesses claimed that police arrived late at the crime spot. .
Apart from Ranjit Singh, police have registered a case against SAD leader Gurveer Singh and another unidentified person under section 302 and arms Act, Hindustan Times reported.
Police on Thursday recovered a SUV in which the accused fled away after killing the officer. Police also seized three weapons from their possession. While two are arrested, the other two are still absconding.
"We arrested Ranjit Singh Rana and one more person in wee hours of the day. Three weapons including 12 bore gun, .315 bore rifles and a pistol were recovered from his possession," Amritsar police commissioner Ram Singh told HT.
Ravinder's daughter, who is a bank employee, had complained about to Ranjit Singh about some men harassing her. Following the complaint, Ravinder had gone to confront the leader and his friends during which the politician shot the cop in his legs.
Eyewitnesses told police that Ranjit went home to get more bullets after sometime he came back and shot the ASI in his chest from point blank range.
The victim was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead.
