Japanese consumer electronics company Akai on Thursday announced the launch of its new Android powered television smart box dubbed "Aka Smart Box" with a price tag of ₹6,590 in India.
"Our Smart box is set to change the way people watch television in India. TVs, irrespective of whether it's a colour TV or LCDs and LEDs, are compatible with the device and using Smart Box can be converted into a smart television," Akai Managing Director Pranay Dhabhai said in a press release.
The Smart Box is powered by a 1.25 GHz CPU processor and has in-built Wi-Fi and an Ethernet port. The device will allow users to browse the internet unlimited and comes with a 3G Dongle and 2G network support. The all-new set-up box comes with a wireless mouse and hosts HDMI port for Full HD video playback.
Akai is aiming at a market of one million in the coming months with the launch of the new set-up box. "The company anticipates a market of 1 lakh units for the AKAI Smart Box in the coming months and hopes to achieve a turnover of Rs. 250 crore by the end of this fiscal with its new technology launches," the release added.
The Android-powered box will enable customers to use their television sets as PCs, and will allow users to access the internet, save pictures, watch movies, check mails, download and listen to music. Customers can even take a printout using a Wi-Fi enabled printer. The box also supports Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) function which allows access and sharing of digital content directly from mobile phones to the TV screen when connected with a common Wi-Fi device.
The Smart Box packs a 4GB of internal memory expandable up to 32 GB through an SD Card and has In-built IM (Google Talk, Skype, and Yahoo) and social networking sites applications (Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter).
The device will be sold in India through online stores as well as through the company's dealers.
