The Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP seems to be trying its best to rope in film stars to revive its fortunes in the state. After unsuccessfully wooing Rajinikanth, it has now reportedly set his eyes on Ajith.
There are rumours that Ajith has got an offer to join the BJP. The party leaders are reportedly trying hard to convince Thala, who has always stayed away from politics, to take the plunge by joining the right-wing party.
Leaders of the saffron party approached Ajith considering his popularity among the youths and in order to lay a strong foundation in Tamil Nadu. Some unconfirmed reports say the "Vedalam" star will meet Narendra Modi soon and formally join the party. But there is no confirmation from both sides.
However, the news has come as a surprise to Ajith's fans, and many have refused to believe their icon would enter politics and join the BJP. It is because the actor has not only showed disinterest towards politics in the past but also ensured he is not used by any political party in the state.
It was evident from Ajith disbanding his fan association a few years after some factions within it aligned with a political party without his consent. His message was loud and clear: He is not interested in politics.
The state BJP unit had wanted Tamil superstar Rajinikanth to join the party, but the actor turned down their request. It may also be recalled that Ilayathalapathy Vijay had met Narendra Modi during his election campaign in 2014, giving rise to rumours that the actor was joining the saffron party.
Politics and cinema have always gone hand-in-hand in Tamil Nadu, and it is not surprising that the state has witnessed a few chief ministers who were associated with the film industry.
