World no.eight Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland has confirmed his participation in the 2014 Aircel Chennai Open.
The competition will be held at the SDAT Stadium from 30 December 30 to 5 January 5 2014. Wawrinka, who has become a regular name at Chennai Open, had partnered Benoit Paire of France to clinch the title in the doubles event last year.
"I am glad to say that Chennai Open will mark my sixth visit to Chennai to participate in a tournament I have grown to respect and love. As always, I am really looking forward to experiencing, once more, the excitement and support of the people," the Swiss said.
Wawrinka enjoyed a spectacular season this year, qualifying for the season-ending ATP World Tour, where he reached the semi-finals and lost to eventual champion and world no.two Novak Djokovic.
The 28-year-old also reached the last four of the 2013 US Open by defeating defending champion Andy Murray in straight sets, to mark his first Grand Slam semi-final appearance. And though he could not progress further, his five-set thriller semi against Djokovic was touted as one of the tournament's best ever matches.
Wawrinka also won the men's doubles event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, partnering Roger Federer.
"Wawrinka is a player adored by fans in Chennai and we are glad to announce that he will be seen in action this year as well. He has had a fantastic playing year and we congratulate him on his stupendous performance at the ATP World Tour Finals," said M.A. Alagappan, president of Tamil Nadu Tennis Association.
