After Bollywood actor Nana Patekar, superstar Akshay Kumar has also made a donation to the farmers of Maharashtra who have been affected by the ongoing drought.
Akshay has decided to donate Rs 90 lakh to the families of the farmers across Maharashtra who committed suicide owing to the drought. The gesture by the "Singh Is Bliing" actor will reportedly help as many as 180 families.
As part of the initiative, 30 widows whose husbands killed themselves due to the crisis were given Rs 50,000 each. The distribution was held at Marathwada on Tuesday, under the supervision of inspector-general of police Vishwas Nangre Patil.
The IGP had met Akshay during the premiere of a film in Mumbai. "Akshay had invited me and during the interval, I spoke to him about the drought in Marathwada and the plight of the farmers. I showed him a video of how actors Nana Patekar and Makrand Anaspure were helping farmers. That's when he expressed his desire to help but he wanted to do it discreetly," NDTV quoted the IGP.
Akshay's wife Twinkle Khanna shared the news on Twitter with the caption saying, "Mr K makes hay when the sun shines & that helps him to do this when drought strikes-every bit helps-pitch in folks! (sic)".
After Nana Patekar made a donation of Rs 16 lakh to the widows of farmers, a number of other celebrities have come up to support the cause.
