SWM Motorcycles is not a known name in the two-wheeler industry. They started with small capacity Enduro, Motocross and off-road motorcycles in the 1970s and 1980s. SWM went in liquidation in 1984 and production ceased. The brand resurrected in 2014 after funding from China's Shineray Group. SWM had showcased six new models at the EICMA show in 2014.
The company is now located in Varese right next to the MV Agusta plant. The range of motorcycles of the company currently includes 300, 445, 500 and 650cc single-cylinder engines. There are Enduro, Supermoto, Classic and On-road family of motorcycles.
MotoRoyale has tied up with SWM and will introduce 650R and SuperDual from the On-road family in India soon, reports Overdrive. SuperDual is a dual purpose bike clearly targeting to capitalise growing adventure bike interest in the country.
The company is reportedly planning to roll out Euro IV complaint models soon and these will be sent for homologation. MotoRoyale will make use of existing infrastructure for the CKD operation of the SVM models.
Previous reports say SVM has plans to kick-start India operations with the launch of its classic range -- Gran Milano and Silver Vase. Powered by 445cc single-cylinder, air/oil-cooled, 4-valve engine, the former gets a classic cafe-racer design while the latter comes in a scrambler avatar. Both the motorcycle styles are hot selling in India and hence Gran Milano and Silver Vase are expected to join the range soon after the brand introduction.
Expected to be priced under Rs 6 lakh, the launch of SVM Motorcycles in India is expected in October.
