"The Affair" season 2 is almost tragic, in that characters struggle to establish happiness but life, luck and the law muddies it with situations that are difficult to cope with. As season 2 progresses, we've witnessed that recently engaged couple Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and his fiancée Alison Bailey (Ruth Wilson) deal with the consequences of having cheated on their estranged spouses Helen Solloway (Maura Tierney) and Cole Lockhart (Joshua Jackson).
Last week in episode 4, Helen's story became the main plot. The successful, confident mother of two unravelled as a single mother. She drank, sniffed marjuana and even got arrested for assaulting a cop. Later as Helen and Noah battled for custody, the court ordered that Alison cannot be near his kids. Noah, the New York based writer, reveals this information to his fiancée and checks in to a motel with his kids.
This week, Alison's estranged husband Cole Lockhart will appear again. The episode guide reveals: "Cole rejects Scotty's plan to make money for the family and enjoys an unexpected connection with someone new; and Scotty catches Cole in a situation best kept secret."
In the promo for episode 5, Cole and his brother Scotty get into a physical altercation. Reason: common love interest. In the upcoming episode, Cole starts dating Luisa (Catalina Sandino Moreno), who also has an interest in Scotty. Later on, Scotty finds out Cole's new love interest and resorts to pushing and shoving his brother .
Although Cole's fight with Scotty is relayed as a casual tiff between the two brothers, this wouldn't be the first time they've disagreed. Earlier in season 2, Scott and Cole fought when the Lockhart family reeled under financial troubles. We predict that the brothers will get into more fights as the season progresses, perhaps even until Scotty's death.
"The Affair" season 2 episode 5 airs on Sunday, 1 November at 10pm on Showtime.
