Infidelity, murder and troubled relationships form the crux of "The Affair's" season 2 plot. If Alison (Ruth Wilson) and Noah (Dominic West) unsuspectingly feel that their relationship can overcome all obstacles, they are wrong. And, as season 2 of the TV series progresses, everyone's life unravels.
In episode 3, the audience witnesses New York-based writer Noah's tiff with his pregnant daughter Whitney. The teenger loses all semblance of normality when she finds her father's girlfriend, Alison, wearing a diamond ring. Although she abuses him for ditching his family, a self-centered Noah begs her not to talk about his engagement to Alison.
However, the preview for episode 4 hints that Whitney disregards her father's wish. Noah receives a court order that states that Alison cannot be near his kids. A confused Noah meets Alison later for lunch and reveals the news just as she shows him pictures of possible new apartments. Noah interjects her future plans and says that he cannot live with her for the sake of his children.
Episode 4's promo clips also detail the tragedy that occurs in Helen's (Maura Tierney) life. She finds solace in alcohol and appears delusional when she tells boutique's employee that Noah is trying to steal all her money and she needs to protect it. Helen's binge drinking even drives away a customer from the shop.
In a separate clip, Helen gets drunk and is arrested by the police. The reason, however, is not yet known. When she meets Noah later, she asks, "Are you the only one allowed to break rules? Why are you doing this to us?"
To be sure, Helen's depiction in episode 4 is a sharp turn from what she used to be. The self-confident mother-of-four was successfull, happily married and lived a life of comfort. Nonetheless, her life unfolds into an abyss of self-pity, anger and hatred towards Noah.
Her brush with the police in episode 4 symbolises a desperate, single woman's troubled journey as the world around her falls apart.
"The Affair" season 2, episode 4 airs on Sunday, 25 October, at 10 pm on Showtime.
