Showtime's "The Affair" may be about Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and Alison's (Ruth Wilson) passionate relationship, but extended families are often entangled in the drama. Although this remains a sub-plot in the show's narrative, it's depiction of the Lockhart family is certainly interesting. And one that could give us answers about Scotty Lockhart's (Colin Donnell) last few days.
In season 2, episode 7, Cole and his family will gain central focus. In what seems to be a flashback scene, Cole (Joshua Jackson) and his younger brother Scotty argue about their penniless existence and Cole's lack of commitment to his family.
Furthermore, the Lockhart family's matriarch, Cherry (Mare Winningham), reveals a disconcerting truth about her family. She tells her sons that the family is doomed and can never experience happiness.
She says, "Our family is cursed, Cole. I remember Cora before she died she tried to tell me this happens in families when something so evil has occurred. The sins of the father have visited the children and now the grandchildren. "
Although the matriarch's beliefs are embedded in superstition, the symbolism of it is not lost on us. The Lockharts suffer a financial death of sorts. Furthermore, the death of Scotty indicates the disruption of family line.
Whether or not Cherry Lockhart's words are a precursor to events that are more ominous, remains to be watched.
"The Affair" season 2 episode 7 airs on Sunday, 15 November at 10pm on Showtime.
