The Mexico plane crash on Tuesday, July 31, might be one of the few rare flight accidents in recent times where every single passenger and crew escaped death, though not unscathed. The passenger plane, an Aeromexico jet was headed towards Mexico City from Durango when the passengers on board faced the near-death experience during take-off.
The Aeromexico flight was carrying 99 passengers which included two infants, nine children and four crew members, ABC News reported.
The distance of the crash site from the runway, however, raises concerns of mechanical failure, according to Durango Civil Protection spokesperson Alejandro Cardoza.
The scene that we can see here is approximately 1 kilometer from the end of the runway. We can say that the airplane was not even able to take off at the moment it was forced to land. We do not know if it was a mechanical failure.
However, strong winds are believed to be the culprit behind the Aeromexico plane crashing not too far from the runway of the airport in Durango. José R Aispuro Torres, the governor of Durango spoke at a presser on Tuesday night after the incident and said that the control tower had noticed strong currents of wind, CNN reported.
Torres added that the plane attempted to abort take-off due to bad weather but it was too late.
However, according to Luis Gerardo Fonseca, chief of Mexico's civil aviation agency, it could be months before the actual cause of the accident is ascertained, Hindustan Times (HT) reported.
The Embraer 190 jet reportedly lost control and crashed into a nearby field. With its left wing skidding off the runway, the Aeromexico flight landed about 300 meters off the runway.
According to one passenger, Anabel Estrada, the plane hit the ground twice.
The second impact was a lot stronger. This is when I jumped and hit my head against the ceiling. After the second impact, I saw flames in the cabin ahead of me.
How did the passengers escape fatality?
The emergency evacuation slides were deployed as the plane began skidding off into the open fields. This made exiting the plane a lot easier and many were able to walk away though sustaining injuries.
A Spokesman for Durango's civil protection agency, Alejandro Cardoza said that quite a few passengers actually managed to move away from the crash site on foot, HT reported.
Though zero deaths have been reported, the plane's pilot and one passenger are said to be in a critical condition while the remaining have been shifted to hospitals for treatment and recuperation.
Based on the data from Planespotters.net, the Embraer 190 flight was at least a decade old and was leased by Aeromexico from the US-based Republic Airlines four years ago. The only fatal crash which involved the Embraer 190 was in 2010 when a Henan Airlines flight overshot the runway leading to the fatal accident, the HT report added.
