The police have detained Malayalam actress Dhanya Mary Varghese in connection with Samson and Sons Builders flat cheating case on Friday, December 16. The director of sales at the real estate company was taken into custody from Nagercoil and will be presented before the magistrate soon.
The actress' husband John Jacob, also an actor, who is the managing director of Samson and Sons, is another accused in the flat sale fraud case. Earlier, the crime detachment officials had arrested Dhanya's father-in-law Jacob Samson in the same case.
According to police complaints, the accused had cheated many people by receiving a huge sum of money from them promising to construct flats at various places in Kerala in 2014. It is understood that they had collected more than Rs 100 crore from over 50 customers.
Dhanya, who made her acting debut with the Tamil movie Thirudi, is known for her roles in the Malayalam movies Red Chillies, Kerala Cafe and Drona 2010, among many others. She is also a recipient of Kerala Film Critics' television Best Actress Award in 2012 for her performance in the serial Daivatinte Swatham Devooty, telecast on Mazhavil Manorama. Dhanya entered the wedlock with John on 9 January 2012 and the couple is also blessed with a three-year-old son Johan.
Earlier, model-turned-Malayalam actress Leena Maria Paul was also arrested in connection with a Rs 10 crore cheating case.
