The police arrested activist Medha Patkar for protesting land acquisition in Allahabad district in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday morning, according to emerging reports.
She was reportedly taken into custody under CrPC section 151 (arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offences) when she reached Karchhana area of Allahabad to participate in a farmers' protest.
Besides Patkar, at least 10 other protesters have also been arrested by the police as they had not taken prior permission from the authorities. Clashes were also reported between farmers and the police.
The farmers in Kachari village had lost their lands as it was acquired by the government for a proposed thermal power plant.
Over 512 hectare had been taken from nearly 2,000 farmers from various villages in the region. Though several of people have accepted compensation in lieu of the lands, some of the farmers have refused to part with their lands.
