Mohit Suri's musical love story "Aashiqui 2" has raked in higher collections during the first weekend than expected.
Despite facing tough competition from superhero flick "Iron Man 3" and the ongoing IPL matches, the romantic film raked in ₹20.50 crore nett from the domestic box office within the first three days of its release.
The first weekend break-up of the film is: Friday ₹6.25 crore, Saturday ₹6.75 crore and Sunday ₹7.50 crore.
In the past few weeks, several films did not witness a jump in collections during the weekend. Even the much hyped supernatural thriller "Ek Thi Daayan" showed a drop in earnings on the first Saturday.
But "Aashiqui 2" is doing good business in India. The film features Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor who are just one or two films old. The film showed 10-15 percent growth in business on Saturday and 20-25 percent rise on Sunday.
"#Aashiqui2 shows 10% - 15% growth on Saturday. Expect 20%+ jump on Sunday, as per trends. Looking at its low costs, this one's a Smash Hit!" trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh said.
The film, released in more than 2800 screens, started with a bang at theatres across India on the first day.
The film dominated the small screens, but at multiplexes of major cities the collections were affected slightly due to Robert Downey Jr. starrer "Iron Man 3".
"Aashiqui 2" did mainly well due to its soulful melodies.
Considering the rise in its collections, it seems that the film will definitely re-create its magic like the prequel "Aashiqui" that was released in 1990.
