Musical love story "Aashiqui 2" directed by Mohit Suri is riding high on success following a dry spell at the box office.
"Aashiqui 2" in its first week collected approximately ₹39 crore at the domestic box office.
Despite its release coinciding with Hollywood film "Iron Man 3" and the ongoing Indian Premiere League season six (IPL 6) matches, "Aashiqui 2" did remarkable business at the collection centres.
The film had done amazing business in the first weekend by earning around ₹20.5 crore and had maintained a strong position on weekdays by collecting around ₹18-₹19 crore.
"#Aashiqui2 collected approx. ₹38/39 cr net in Week 1," trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh said.
"#Aashiqi2. Informed sources reveal the week figure is not ₹36.5 crores but ₹39 crores," the film's producer Mahesh Bhatt tweeted.
As reported earlier, the film's collection on Wednesday at some circuits were much higher than that of Monday and Tuesday due to the May Day holiday.
However, the collections were slightly affected in multiplexes due to the release of "Iron Man 3". But overall the film had an excellent first week.
"Both films have done very well. In fact, it was the best weekend this year so far. The net income of Aashiqui 2 was around ₹ 19 crore, and Iron Man 3, across all languages, made around ₹ 27 crore," trade analyst Komal Nahta said, according to Hindustan Times.
The low-budget film starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor had made good profits from its theatrical run in the domestic market. The film was not released in major overseas circuits such as UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
