Bollywood's romantic musical "Aashiqui 2" starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor withstood competition from action thriller "Shootout At Wadala" and continues to rise high at the domestic box office.
"Aashiqui 2", made on a budget of ₹12 crore, has collected ₹54.5 crore in 14 days and has been declared the first super hit of the year. The film has also beat the domestic collections of "Kai Po Che" and Ajay Devgn starrer "Himmatwala" which had collected around ₹48 crore and ₹47 crore, respectively.
A remake of the 1990 cult classic "Aashiqui", the Mohit Suri directorial has collected approximately ₹17.5 crore nett in the second week, rounding of the grand total to ₹54.5 crore.
Summing up the total, film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#Aashiqui2 collected approx. ₹17.5 cr nett in Week 2. Total: ₹54.5 cr nett. Super Hit."
"Aashiqui 2" had collected approximately ₹38-₹39 crore in the first week despite facing tough competition from the seventh installment of Hollywood superhero flick "Iron Man 3".
The collections of "Aashiqui 2" were estimated to decline after the release of "Shootout At Wadala" and "Bombay Talkies" but continued to fare well. Reports said that the film's makers were aiming to reach ₹58-₹60 crore nett in lifetime collections. However, considering the pace the film is moving at, it is not expected to cross the set target.
"Aashiqui 2" hit the screens on 26 April and its songs had become chartbusters even before the theatrical release. The film is co-produced by Mukesh Bhatt, Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar.
Apart from Aditya and Shraddha, the film also stars Shaad Randhawa, Mahesh Thakur and Salil Acharya.
