Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes succumbed to the fatal head injury after a ball hit him on the back of the head, leaving behind millions of grieving fans worldwide.
Hughes collapsed on the ground during the Sheffield Shield match between South Wales and South Australia, after being struck by 22-year-old Sean Abbot's bouncer.
Though the left-handed opening batsman was rushed to St Vincent's hospital, he was pronounced dead on Thursday and the cause of his death is said to be 'dissected vertebral artery'.
"He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday. He was not in pain before he passed away and was surrounded by his family and close friends," Australia team doctor Peter Brukner said on Thursday, according to BBC.
Apart from the cricketer's family, friends and colleagues, other sportsmen and well-known personalities across the world paid their tributes to the young star.
