A 60-year-old woman, who was admitted to hospital for severe stomach ache, reportedly delivered a girl child on Thursday in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
Lilabai, mother of three - two daughters and a son - delivered her fourth child by cesarean section at Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH) on Thursday. She was initially admitted to Prakash Chand Sethi Hospital in Indore on Tuesday evening after she complained of stomach ache.
To the mother's surprise, the doctors found out after examination that the she was pregnant with her fourth child.
Dr Urmila Tiwari, gynaecologist at Prakash Chand Sethi Hospital, referred Lilabai to MYH where she underwent surgery. Doctors at MYH first thought of operating the lady on Wednesday but didn't take the risk since the case was a little complicated.
The lady, who hails from Rasanpura village of Khandwa district, had a problem of low haemoglobin, and was unfit to deliver the baby, The Times of India reported. Doctors stabilized her condition on Thusrday before conducting the surgery.
"The patient and the baby are healthy. The lady has delivered a girl baby weighing 3.5 kg," said Dr Lakshmi Maru, head of gynaecology department.
This is not the first time a woman over 60 years of age has given birth. In 2008, Rajo Devi from Alewa village in Haryana became the oldest mother in the history ever to have a child.
Devi was 70-years-old when she gave birth to a baby girl in November 2008.
In 2006, Adriana Iliescu, a Romanian, gave birth at the age of 67.
