A 36-hour-long "transplant-athon" was conducted by the doctors at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai using the organs of five brain dead patients for 23 different patients.
The milestone surgery was held at the health care service provider's flagship hospital on Greams Road, Chennai on Wednesday, 6 May.
Four kidneys, one heart and five livers were harvested on Wednesday and the remaining organs were sent to needy patients in different hospitals.
"It was a special day for Apollo Hospitals, Asia's foremost health care provider, when 5 grieving families agreed to donate organs of their loved ones to give 23 people in end-stage organ failure a second chance to live. A heartfelt thank you to all the organ donors' families and the entire clinical team for this humanitarian act," posted on the hospital's Facebook page.
A special meeting was also organised to thank the families for their immense support in donating the organs to needy.
