At least 26 people were killed and 27 others injured in a bus accident that took place on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in the wee hours of Monday.
According to reports, the victims were on their way to Pune after attending a wedding in Mumbai, when a speeding tempo crashed into their bus, which was said to have broken down at Khalapur on the expressway, and was standing stationary on the road.
The incident reportedly took place around 1 a.m. near Khalapur village, some 80 kilometers from Mumbai, the report said.
Some of the passengers reportedly got down from the bus and sat between two buses, the second one also carrying members of the marriage party. The speeding tempo hit one of the buses killing at least 26.
Some victims were sleeping inside the bus and were completely unaware when the incident occurred, First Post said.
The injured passengers were rushed to various hospitals including the MGM hospital at Panvel near Mumbai and the Sassoon hospital in Pune.
Authorities have detained the driver of the tempo.
