Update: 3: 36 p.m. IST — Three cab drivers have been detained in relation to a gang rape that took place in Kolkata's Salt Lake area on Monday, News18 reported.
Original Story — A 25-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped in a moving SUV in Salt Lake, Kolkata, on Sunday night. The incident was similar to the 2012 Park Street rape case. The woman said that she was thrown out of the car after four people took turns at raping her.
The woman, who works at a dance bar, is believed to be from Nepal and has been living in the area for the last three years, the Hindustan Times reported. She reportedly took an Uber cab around 11 p.m. on Sunday and mistakenly got off near College More at Sector V. Finding a man standing nearby, she asked him for directions.
"She said she was confused about the location and thus sought help from a youth, who was standing nearby. The youth reportedly said he did not know exactly where the shop was but would confirm the same from his friends. He then called up someone," a senior police officer told the Indian Express.
"Soon, three youths arrived in an SUV. They offered her lift to the coffee shop. As soon as she and the youth from whom she asked for directions got into the car, they sped off. The four allegedly took turns to rape her," the police officer said.
In her complaint, the woman said that she was pushed out of the car around 3 a.m. on Monday at Baishakhi More in Salt Lake. She said that she was discovered by a taxi driver there and was taken to the Bidhannagar North police station.
She was later taken to Bidhannagar Sub-Division Hospital for a medical test. The doctors have confirmed that the woman was raped, the Indian Express reported.
"A case has been lodged. No one has been arrested yet but we are conducting raids," said Jawed Shamim, the Bidhannagar City Police Commissioner.
The Nepal Consul General Sita Basnet has said that once the nationality of the woman is confirmed, they'll be pushing for a speedy investigation.
