Maruti Suzuki has launched an updated Ertiga MPV with hybrid diesel engine and increased fuel efficiency. The MPV segment in India is hot selling and Ertiga is a main contender. The new updates in Ertiga are expected to increase the sales for Maruti Suzuki. The other Japanese manufacturer, Honda, has the Mobilio in the MPV segment, also available in the petrol and diesel avatar. While the Ertiga and Mobilio go neck and neck in comparison, the prominent player, the Toyota Innova, cannot be missed.
In terms of price, Innova won't be a competitor for Ertiga. Maruti Suzuki MPV's variants are priced under the Rs 10 lakh bracket while most of the Innova variants are priced above Rs 10 lakh. We also found a good contender in Mobilio.
Engine Specifications
Petrol
The new Ertiga comes with the same K-Series petrol engine with the displacement 1,373cc that develops 93.7bhp at 6,000rpm and 130Nm of torque at 4,000rpm mated to five-speed manual transmission. A new four-speed automatic transmission is also available with petrol engine.
Honda Mobilio is powered by 1497cc i-VETC engine that develops 117bhp at 6,600rpm and 145Nm at 4,600rpm mated to five-speed manual transmission. The Toyota Innova is currently not sold in petrol format.
The bigger engine makes the Mobilio the most powerful MPV with 117bhp in comparison. The only MPV offer in petrol automatic is the Ertiga.

Diesel
The main change to the upgraded Ertiga lies under the hood. The 1,248cc DDiS multi-jet diesel engine, developing 89bhp at 4,000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 1,750rpm now comes with SHVS small hybrid system that debuted with Ciaz hybrid. The engine is mated to five-speed manual transmission.
The Toyota Innova diesel is powered by in-line four-cylinder 2,494cc turbo engine that develops 100.6bhp at 3,600rpm maximum torque of 200Nm of peak torque at 1,200-3,600rpm. The engine is mated to five speed manual transmission.
The Mobilio is powered by a 1,498cc i-DTEC diesel engine that develops 98.6bhp at 3,600rpm and 200Nm of torque at 1,750rpm mated to five-speed manual transmission.
In terms of power, Innova leads the table with 100.6bhp followed by Mobilio with 100.6bhp. The new Ertiga is the least powered MPV in comparison due to the lower displacement engine.

Dimensions and weight
The Ertiga measures 4,265mm in length, 1,695mm in width and 1,685mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,740mm. The Maruti MPV also has 185mm of ground clearance, 45-litres of fuel tank capacity and turning radius of 5.2metres. The petrol Ertiga weighs 1,760kg and the diesel variants weigh 1,845kg.
The Toyota Innova is 4,585mm in length, 1,765 in width and 1,760mm in height, along with the class-leading 2,750mm wheelbase. The MPV comes with 5.4metres turning radius and 55litres of fuel capacity. The weight of the Innova varies from 1,660kg to 1,700kg depending upon the variant.
On the other hand, Honda Mobilio measures 4,386mm length, 1,683mm width and 1,603mm height with 2,652mm wheelbase. The Honda MPV has 189mm ground clearance, 5.4metres turning radius and 42-litres of fuel tank capacity. The kerb weights start from 1,131kg to 1,160 kg for petrol variants while diesel Mobilio weighs 1,214kg to 1,253kg depending upon the variants.
In terms of length width and height, Toyota leads the table. The compact dimensions make Ertiga's turning radius to 5.2metres against 5.4metres of other two. The Innova also has a bigger fuel tank capacity, which is ideal for long drives.
Fuel Efficiency
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga diesel comes with a claimed fuel efficiency of 24.52kmpl while petrol variants return 17.5kmpl.
The Mobilio fuel efficiency figures are 24.5kmpl for RS, RS(O) diesel variants while rest of the diesel variants returns 24.2kmpl. The petrol powered Mobilio returns 17.3kmpl.
The Innova's 2.5-litre common-rail diesel comes with claimed fuel efficiency of 12.99kmpl, the least efficient of the three.
With the SHVS mild hybrid system in place, the Ertiga diesel overtakes Mobilio diesel fuel efficiency by a whisker. The same trend goes with petrol variants and the completion on fuel efficiency by Ertiga and Mobilio is pretty neck and neck.
