The year 2013 witnessed quite a few hit films featuring big stars like Ajith, Kamal Haasan and Suriya, with the likes of "Arrambam","Singam 2", "Vishwaroopam" and "Pandiya Nadu" turning out to be massive hits.
A few low budget films, with lesser known actors, also clicked at the box office. Films including "Soodhu Kavvum", "Moodar Koodam" and "Neram" received critical appreciation. Unfortunately, some most-anticipated films, such as Karthi's "All in All Azhaguraja" and Arya's "Irandam Ulagam", bit the dust as they failed to impress the audience.
With 2013 gone, cinema lovers have started looking up for the 2014 Tamil releases. And there is an interesting line-up of Tamil films releasing this year.
From "Veeram" to Suriya-Lingusamy's untitled film, check out the list of films set to release in 2014.
Veeram
Ajith's upcoming film Veeram will be the first big release of the year 2014. The film carries high expectations, thanks to Ajith's star power and the success of his latest release "Arrambam."
Directed by "Siruthai" Siva, "Veeram" is about Ajith and his four brothers (played by Bala, Vidarth, Suhail and Munish). Tamanna, Santhanam and Ramesh Khanna will also appear in pivotal roles. The film is confirmed to hit the screens on 10 January as a Pongal festival treat for his fans.
Jilla
Vijay's Jilla will release in January and is likely to clash with "Veeram". Directed by RT Nesan, Jilla has Vijay and Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in lead roles. Kajal Aggarwal, Poornima Bhagyaraj and Mahat Raghavendra will appear in significant roles.
Vishwaroopam 2
Kamal Haasan's "Vishwaroopam 2" is expected to release in February, though there is no official confirmation on the same. The film was initially slated to hit the screens during Diwali 2013 but post-production work delayed its release. The film is a sequel to "Vishwaroopam," a spy thriller written and directed by Kamal.
Most of the actors from the star-studded cast in the first part, including Pooja Kumar, Shekhar Kapur, Rahul Bose and Andrea, have been retained for the sequel. Veteran Bollywood actress Waheeda Rehman is a new addition to the cast of "Vishwaroopam 2," and will don the role of Kamal's mother.
While "Vishwaroopam" was set in foreign locations such as Afghanistan and the US, the sequel will be set largely in India. According to reports, "Vishwaroopam 2" will have more of emotional content.
Kochadaiiyaan
Rajnikanth's upcoming film "Kochadaiiyaan" is expected to release in April on the occasion of the Tamil New Year's Day. Fans have been eagerly waiting to see their 'Thalaivar' back on screen after a span of nearly three years. "Kochadaiiyaan" was expected to release in 2013 but post-production work has delayed it to April.
According to reports, the audio launch of the Rajini starrer will happen in January. However, there is no official confirmation on the same. Directed by debutant Soundarya, the epic drama is touted as India's first film to use motion-capture technology. The film stars Rajnikanth in dual roles - as father and son. Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, Shobana, Jackie Shroff, Nasser, Sarat Kumar and Aadhi will appear in pivotal roles.
I
Vikram-Shankar team's magnum opus "I" is likely to battle it out with Rajnikanth's Kochadaiiyaan on Tamil New Year's Day (14 April). The film carries a lot of expectations as Vikram has teamed up with Shankar after a gap of eight years. Their previous film "Anniyan", released in 2005, was a major hit at the box office.
Amy Jackson, of "Madarasapattinam" fame, has been cast as the female lead. Vikram, who has lost weight for the Shakar directorial, will appear in more than one look in the film.
"I", deemed as an action thriller flick, is produced by Venu Ravichandran under Aascar Films banner.
Suriya-Lingusamy's Untitled Film
Suriya has teamed up for the first time with Lingusamy in a new film. Post the success of "Singam 2", Suriya will reportedly be seen in yet another commercial entertainer.
Samantha Ruth Prabhu will play the female lead in the film. The other cast members include Manoj Bajpai, Vidyut Jamwal and Rajpal Yadav.
The film will be a 2014 release but it is not clear as to when the makers are planning to release the Suriya starrer. Buzz is that the film will hit screens in mid-2014.
Velai Illa Pattadhari
Dhanush's "Velai Illa Pattadhari" will be a 2014 summer release. The film, directed by cinematographer Velraj, will have Amala Paul as the female lead.
Recently, the first look poster of "Velai Illa Pattadhari" was released which showed Dhanush sporting six-pack abs. The film's teaser was released on 31 December, as a New Year treat for fans. Looking at the teaser, one can expect the Dhanush starrer to be an action-packed, comedy entertainer.
The film's music is composed by Anirudh of "3" and "Vanakkam Chennai" fame.
Naan Sigappu Manithan
Post the success of "Pandiya Nadu", Vishal's "Naan Sigappu Manithan" has generated a lot of expectations. Laskhmi Menon teams up with Vishal for the second time in "Naan Sigappu Manithan."
The fact that the film's title is the same as the 80s Rajinikanth starrer has also kindled the curiosity of the audience.
UTV Motion Pictures is co-producing the film with Vishal's banner. The film is likely to release in April 2014.
Maan Karate
Siva Karthikeyan's "Maan Karate" is one of the most-awaited films of 2014. The film has Siva reportedly playing the role of a boxer, while Hansika Motwani appears as the female lead.
Siva is on a roll post the success of three back-to-back films including "Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga", "Ethir Neechal" and "Varuthapadha Vaalibar Sangam," all of which released in 2013.
The success has catapulted Siva to the top league of actors. "Maan Karate," directed by Thirukumaran, is now highly anticipated by fans.
Simbu-Pandiraj's Untitled Film
Simbu has teamed up with director Pandiraj for the first time. Interestingly, the yet-to-be-titled flick will have Nayanthara playing the female lead.
