Two Territorial Army soldiers were killed on Monday in Pakistani firing on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district, a police official said.

"Two Territorial Army personnel identified as Tariq Ahmad Lone and Waseem Ahmad Lone of 160 TA Battalion attached with 13 Sikh Regiment died in ceasefire violation by Pakistan army at New Post Tarbal Baktoor in Gurez sector (on Bandipora)," a senior police officer told IANS in Srinagar.

The officer said it was being ascertained whether Pakistan firing was intended to facilitate infiltration of militants into the Valley.

NDTV quoted an army spokesman in Srinagar saying that "The Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire by opening firing in Gurez sector at 12.30 pm which lasted till 2.00 pm."

He said two jawans were killed in the firing by Pakistani troops, who used automatic rifles, machine guns and mortars to target the Indian posts.

"Our troops responded to the unprovoked aggression in equal measure," he added.

The ceasefire violation comes five days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled to visit to Jammu and Kashmir on November 7.

A week ago, field commanders of the Border Security Force or BSF and Pakistan Rangers agreed to respect the bilateral ceasefire and work together to bring down tension on the border in Jammu and Kashmir.
